High Temperature Superconductors, Inc. (HTSI) was formed in 2019 with the goal of building a best-in-class manufacturing facility for high-volume production of ReBCO HTS wire to meet fusion customers’ demands. In February 2020, HTSI purchased Superconductor Technologies, Inc.’s HTS wire assets, including equipment, intellectual property, relevant patents, and testing equipment. Founded in 1986, STI had over 10 years in HTS wire development. Since acquiring STI’s assets, HTSI has designed, built and procured additional equipment to upgrade and complete a production line. The factory was originally designed to support wafer fab manufacturing with over 10,000 sq ft of cleanroom space and a dedicated wet lab in Santa Barbara, California. Our facility is capable of production of 1200 km per year of 16 mm wide (6,400 km at 4mm wide) wire with plans to increase production in the next 2 years. The 16mm wire can be laser slit to 12 and 4mm to meet fusion customers' needs.
In June 2022, HTSI successfully completed the acquisition of PVD Products, Inc. (PVD), a company founded in 2000 and based just outside of Boston, Massachusetts. PVD is a leading manufacturer of custom large-area pulsed laser deposition (PLD) systems along with thin film physical vapor deposition (PVD) systems, reel-to-reel deposition equipment for the coated conductor market, and combinatorial deposition tools for rapid process development. PVD also offers design and engineering services for a wide variety of high quality PLD, magnetron, sputtering and evaporation systems. HTSI's investment in PVD Products aligns with the Company's focus on the commercialization of high temperature superconducting wire. The fabrication of these coated conductors requires ion beam assisted deposition (iBAD) and PLD equipment manufactured by PVD. The combination of HTSI and PVD strengthens the Company's ability to meet the demand for superconducting wire for new resilient, reliable, and sustainable power applications, including fusion systems.
